Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, a recent rewriting of the British legend
Robin Hood Prince of Thieves was released in 1991 and was produced by Kevin Reynolds.
The movie happens during the thirteenth century during the crusades. Robin of Locksley, played by Kevin Costner, went on a crusade with King Richard the First, known as Richard Lionheart.
Robin was sent to jail by Muslims but he frees himself along with a noble Turkish call Azeem, played by Morgan Freeman. After Robin gets back to England, Azeem follows him because he has a debt towards Robin, and sees that it has changed.
The country is ruled by the Sheriff of Nottingham, played by Alan Rickman, while the King is absent. The Sheriff is a harsh ruler who takes money to the poor to make himself richer.
The Sheriff of Nottingham killed Robin's father because he "worshiped the Devil" and when Robin discovered the corpse of his father he promised with his own blood the revenge of his father.
After that Robin comes to meet Marian, played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (who has wonderful hair in this movie, I'm jealous of her), to tell her about her brother's death and he leaves her in a hurry because the Sheriff's men are coming for him because he already has issues with him.
Robin and Azeem lost them in the forest of Sherwood because it is known to be haunted by the people around. In this forest they meet Little John and the other poor people who are hiding from the terrible laws of the Sheriff of Nottingham.
Robin feels compassion for them and offers them a way to get their money back by stealing the rich and redistributing the money to them. Robin's head is in the opening bid but no one brings Robin to the Sherif because with Robin they earn more money than what the Sherif can give them.
They are soon joined by Friar Tuck, after that he was made a fool of himself by the people of Sherwood, he is a Friar who LOVES beer as much as he loves God (to don't say more than God).
The Sheriff learned information from a letter of Marian to the King about Robin and attacked Sherwood; he took some of the people of Sherwood as prisoners to hang them just before his (forced) wedding with Marian.
Robin and Azeem, escorted by the people of Sherwood who survived and free, come to save the prisoners and Marian from this wedding she doesn't want. During the final battle between the Sheriff and Robin, Azeem pays his debt.
The final scene of the movie is the wedding of Marian and Robin in Sherwood and the King (played by Sean Connery, arrives to bless his cousin Marian's wedding.
I love this movie, the sets represent well the Middle Ages (even though there's maybe some anachronisms), the soundtracks are just excellent (Everything I do, I do it for you of Bryan Adams is just an excellent song, go listen to it if you don't know it).
5/5 It is just perfect, the fact that some historical events were added (the crusades) and also add a character with it (the character of Azeem). The only thing I have to say is to not watch it with a kid because I did watch it at a young age (7/8), I wasn't shocked but some scenes aren't really made for kids.
See you next week for the next article. We can even share a raclette together.
