The Pope's exorcist, a new horror movie based on real events
The Pope's exorcist is a 2023 movie by Julius Avery.
If you are easily disturbed I don't recommend you to watch this movie or even read my article.
This movie is based on the novels An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories of Gabriele Amorth.
The events of the movie happen in 1986.
This movie retraces the exorcism of a young American boy, Henry, who just got to Spain with his family one year after the death of his father.
His mother first thought that he was mentally ill after his first sign of possession. Something that brings back to what Gabriele Amorth (Russell Crowe) said earlier in the movie with the Vatican, they have to check first if it is not a mental issue before doing an exorcism.
Because the family, who inherited the religious place in Spain, had direct contact with a priest they soon knew that the young boy was probably possessed. Father Esquibel warns the Vatican of this young boy and the Pope asks Father Amorth to take care of it.
Father Amorth, after taking a look at the young bay's file, takes his Vespa to go right from Vatican to Spain to check by himself if Henry is possessed or mentally ill.
Father Esquibel welcomes the exorcist once he gets here and introduces him to the family who didn't know the priest contacted the Vatican.
Gabriele confirms that Henry is possessed and wants to know what could have made the young boy's soul easier to get possessed, the mother explains that Henry was alone with his father when he died.
The only issue for Gabriele now is to know the demon's name to get rid of it and save Henry because he couldn't survive really long if he and Father Esquibel don't do something quickly.
Both of them discover the darkest part of one of the dark parts of Spanish history during their research about the demon's name.
I really loved the use of a real exorcist and the use of History in it, it shows both of them are compatible.
I hope there will be another movie of Gabriele Amorth's exorcism/story because it is really interesting.
This movie made me discovered another name in the paranormal world and it's great to change because at one moment the public can get exhausted to see the Warrens on screen (it's not against Ed and Lorraine Warren but they are WAY too famous and they lose a lot of credibility because they have done a lot of marketing around them).
[Quick break about what I've just said about the Warrens I don't say that it's real or not, I'm neutral because it is about the beliefs of each and I respect each point of views]
There's a lot of jokes done by Father Amorth that I really enjoyed because it calms down the atmosphere.
4.8/5 I loved this movie, the actions were well dispatched in the movie and I really wanted to know more about Gabriele Amorth when I got out of the theater. I really want to know if there will be another movie about him because it seems teased but I think that Julius Avery wants to know first if the public goes to see his movie and enjoys it before making the second one.
See you next week for the next article.
