Willow, the beginning of fantasy on the silver screen
Willow is a 1988 movie directed by Ron Howard.
The cruel Queen Bavmorda hears a prophecy about a child who will be the
cause of her downfall and tries to find it by all means. She imprisons all
the pregnant women of the kingdom and one of them gives birth to the child
of the prophecy but got smuggled out by a nurse who was hunted down.
Luckily she had the time to make the baby escape.
The baby was found by the Ufgoods and the father, Willow (played by Warwick
Davis), has to bring back the baby girl to the Dakinis (tall people) to
whom she belongs. He meets Madmartigan (played by Val Killmer) at a
crossroad, the Daikini is locked in a crow's cage but he promises to keep
the child safe but Willow doesn't trust him.
Madmartigan gives Willow some troubles on the way and "thanks" to him they
find out the baby's name, Elora Danan; the Fairy Cherlindrea gives them
Elora's name and tells them to find an old enchantress who will help them
on their quest.
After finding this enchantress they arrive at Queen Bavmorda's castle and
a great battle starts to save the fate of Elora and all the living people
who live on the lands.
Sorsha (played by Joanne Whalley), the daughter of Bavmorda, joins Willow
to save everyone because Madmartigan changed her mind (and also because
they fell in love). Together they save the baby and all the kingdoms.
Even if the special effects seem really bad, in fact they were excellent
for the time. It's just that it didn't age well, it's quite a good movie.
The universe is not well developed but it has a lot of potential.
4.9/5 Due to the lack of development of the universe I can't give it a
perfect notation.
See you next week for the next article. We can even share a raclette together.
